October Events Results

The 2007 Seattle Cup
West Seattle wins the 4 day, 4 course interclub matches against Jackson Park, Jefferson Park and Interbay. The Champions will proudly display the cup for the 5th time in the trophy case at West Seattle Golf Course.

The Devil’s Nas-Saw
We would like to thank all of the participants who were brave enough to play in the Devil’s Nas-Saw. They saw the most difficult layout in all of golf and a Blair Pitch Project that only exist in nightmares and video games. If you didn’t play then mark your calendar for Halloween weekend 2008.

Rule of the Month

Rule 25 – Abnormal Ground Conditions

“Casual Water”

a. Interference
Interference occurs if Casual Water is touching your ball, affecting your stance or area of intended swing. If the player's ball lies on the putting green, interference also occurs if casual water on the putting green intervenes on his line of putt.

b. Relief
Except when the ball is in a water hazard or a lateral water hazard, a player may take relief from interference by casual water as follows:

* Through the Green: If the ball lies through the green, the player must lift the ball and drop it without penalty within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.

*In a Bunker: If the ball is in a bunker, the player must lift the ball and drop it either:(a) Without penalty the nearest point of relief must be in the bunker and the ball must be dropped in the bunker (b) Under penalty of one stroke, outside the bunker keeping the point where the ball lay directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the bunker the ball may be dropped.

*On the Putting Green: If the ball lies on the putting green, the player must lift the ball and place it without penalty at the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief or maximum available relief may be off the putting green.

Golf Tip and Lesson Promotion of the Month!

By Tyler Wong

Assistant Professional,

West Seattle GC

Here are a few things you'll need to know about playing in the wind.
1. Never try to hit your club your max yardage. The faster the club is swung the higher the spin rate. Into a head wind the ball will balloon up and your shot will come up short. The less spin you have on the golf ball the less the wind will affect your shot.
2. Take a wider stance. The wind can move you around and affect your balance. Widen your stance. This lowers your center of gravity and helps to maintain a solid base into the ground.
3. Shorten your stroke. The longer your backstroke the more chance you have of over swinging and having balance problems. By keeping the backstroke shorter you'll have more control.
4. Take a smooth swing. A wind shot is not the same violent down swing as a punch shot. Yes, you are trying to keep the ball low, but cheating the wind is all about lowering the balls’ spin rate.
5. Take the correct club. Playing downwind and into the wind are not created equal. A 20 mile per hour headwind may require 3 extra clubs but a 20 mile per hour downwind may only require one less club.
